New Degree Dedicated to Newspace in Partnership with UVSQ

27 September 2024

From the start of the 2023 academic year, students in ESTACA’s space program will be able to follow the Master 2 specialization in “Space Challenges and New Applications” (NEWSPACE) at the University of Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines (UVSQ), and obtain a dual diploma. Through this alliance, made official at the Paris Air Show, the two establishments aim to meet the need for skills in the NewSpace sector.

Innovative Master’s created by UVSQ to meet skills needs in the space sector

With a strong focus on observation and data quality, the Master 2 NEWSPACE (“Space Challenges and New Applications”), created by UVSQ in 2021 and accredited by Université Paris-Saclay, aims to provide knowledge of the entire chain from the design of scientific observation instruments to data exploitation in order to meet the demands of the market and new professions linked to emerging applications: miniaturization and fleets, drones, etc. It is designed to meet the demands of the private sector, as well as those of “instrumental” public research laboratories.

The course includes periods of practical experience in hands-on work in facilities dedicated to space and with special software, tutored team projects on concrete calls for tender and an internship of at least 6 months in a company or public or private research laboratory. The teaching team is made up of researchers and engineers who have designed and operated space missions, as well as engineers from partner companies. The university has a workshop, a FabLab and a PIT integration and testing platform, with equipment such as clean rooms, vacuum tanks, an immersive video wall, a vibrating pot and a control room for satellite piloting.

Students can make the most of a scientific space laboratory environment including the LATMOS (Laboratory for Atmospheres, Environments and Space Observations).

« Backed by our LATMOS laboratory (Laboratory for Atmospheres, Environments and Space Observations), and with experience of the two satellites designed and developed by UVSQ that are now orbiting the Earth, this training program is perfectly in line with the strategic roadmap of the French space ecosystem. Working with traditional stakeholders and startups in the field, it provides students access to the space infrastructures of the OVSQ (Observatoire de Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines) and brings them into contact with the latest technological innovations to help them develop a new way of working in the space sector that is more respectful of resources and budgets.  »

President of UVSQ

As part of the new dual diploma, a dozen ESTACA engineering students will be trained at the UVSQ.

Ten ESTACA engineering students can now apply for the Master 2 NEWSPACE program at UVSQ, while enrolling in their final year of engineering studies. The two training courses will be arranged on a reciprocal basis. The M2 NEWSPACE UVSQ-ESTACA dual diploma course will lead to a Master 2 degree from the Université de Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines and an engineering degree from ESTACA.

On completion of the dual diploma, ESTACA engineers will be able to pursue a doctorate, for example through CIFRE (Conventions Industrielles de Formation par la Recherche) grants, to meet the strong need for innovation in this sector. They will also be able to work in the NewSpace sector as design engineers, systems engineers, opto-electronics engineers, salespeople, project managers, data scientists and all the professions linked to the cross-fertilization of space data and the implementation of application solutions…

« We are delighted that this partnership meets one of the objectives in our 2030 strategic plan, to foster even more networking and develop alliances with other schools. This dual diploma is in line with our desire to offer students training that matches the skills expected by industry. At the heart of the strategic challenges facing the space industry, ESTACA will be upgrading its range of training courses in September 2022, to give greater prominence to new stakeholders, and to meet the challenges raised by the emergence of a new private space industry and new space applications »
