The space program in the spotlight

15 November 2021

While Thomas Pesquet was returning to Earth after a six-month mission on the ISS (International Space Station), ESTACA space program students were in the press. The ESTACA Rocket Club (Estaca Space Odyssey) spoke with a journalist from Le Monde to showcase their projects and talk about their reasons for joining the program and their vision of the field.

A team from France 3 television also came to ESTACA to interview students who had been selected to participate in the CNES and Novespace parabolic flight in October.

In the footsteps of Thomas Pesquet, young engineers reach for the stars

Eric Nunes, a journalist from Le Monde, visited the Pépinière on the SQY campus to meet Hugo da Silva, Chloé Pasquier, Benjamin Wurgler, Etienne Montier and Martin Noble. He talked with them about their reasons for joining the industry and their vision of space.

Excerpts:

On November 9th, while astronaut Thomas Pesquet was leaving the International Space Station command to return to Earth, future aerospace engineers kept their eyes in the sky in the hope that their turn would come.

« For a generation of French engineering students, Thomas Pesquet has turned space exploration from a distant dream into a reality. Like us, he went to high school, preparatory class, then engineering school. For us, it has shifted the realm of possibilities. Becoming an astronaut was a childhood dream. »
Benjamin Wurgler
21, in his fourth year at Estaca.
« In the battle between nations for access to space, “maintaining autonomous access is a demonstration of military strength and proof of independence”, investment is not about to dry up. »
Chloé Pasquier

Benjamin, Hugo, and Chloe all want to follow in the footsteps of Thomas Pesquet and reach for the stars as astronauts. Alyzée, Léa and the others want to push the boundaries of what is possible with both feet on the ground.

« I want to advance the technology “whether it's to design a launch craft, a satellite, or a rover. Helping to improve a process to enable us to go further collectively. To infinity and beyond,” said Buzz Lightyear. »
Etienne Montier
21, a fourth-year student at Estaca

France 3 television also came to ESTACA to interview the students who took part in the CNES parabolic flight and Ahmed Benabed, the teacher-researcher who helped them prepare their scientific experiment. The report on the space program including the ESTACA students’ experiment was broadcast on Wednesday November 10th.
